Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Co-Op?

A co-operative is a group of persons (member-owners) that voluntarily come together to meet the common economic, social, and cultural needs of the group.  It is member-owned and member-operated for the mutual benefits of ALL members.  The cooperative business plan brings together owners, controllers and users into one group.

The members of Start Making Art own Start Making Art.  They say what is important to them and we listen and act on those ideas.  The business is solely for the benefit of the members.  The members are involved in decision making and any profits are reinvested into Start Making Art.

Start Making Art is a business.  It is not a charitable organization or a social service agency.

Who Benefits from the Co-Op?

A co-op benefits its members!  In benefiting the members the community is also supported as part of their commitment to cooperative values and principles.

Who Controls the Co-Op?

Member-Owners democratically control the direction of Start Making Art.  Once a membership is established those individuals vote to set goals and are accountable to the membership for decision making.  The Co-Op is a shared community entity.  If an artist wishes to share their talent with the group then they are welcome to teach the monthly activity.

Why Should People Form a Co-Op?

In private-owned businesses individuals invest to earn a financial return.  In a co-op individuals come together because of a shared need for particular products or services.  In the case of Start Making Art, artists of every age and every level are coming together to make art and have their voices heard in their local communities.  By joining together, members gain access to products, services and markets that are not otherwise as easily accessible.  Members-Owners of Start Making Art are encouraged to come together so that their mutual needs can be met.  Start Making Art will return financial gains to their members through discounts, fully supplied activities, and lower costs and availability of services.

Who Can Be a Part of Start Making Art?

Anyone can be a part of Start Making Art!  Any age of person, any ability of person, and any local business with a desire to give back to the artist community is encouraged to be a part of the Start Making Art, Artist's Co-Op.

What if I need Accommodations?

We will assist with any type of needs to our greatest of ability.  Whether you or a person you know has a need for additional supports please contact us!  We are glad to help meet the needs of our community members with mobility needs, who may or may not have developmental or intellectual disabilities, who have social, physical, or emotional behaviors, or who may just be a little bit reserved in starting something new in their lives.  Come one, come all!
